Pros and cons of NAVIGON Australia app for iPhone and iPad

NAVIGON Australia app good for

Gives good warning and names the streets. Lets you anticipate safely.
I have used for the past week on my iPhone and it has worked well. Being from North America I didnt want to rack up big data chages with Google maps. I have the 3D add on on it works pretty much like a stand alone GPS. It was helpful finding addresses and points of interest. One issue seems to be that its not easy to bring up the map without an address, but maybe that was just me. If you have an address or looking for a Point of Interest it works well
Loving it so far! The v1.2 update gives spoken street names and much better handling of roundabouts (e.g. it now says "take the second exit from the roundabout on to Liverpool St". Auto night view is definitely an advantage. Ive been using v1.0 for a couple of weeks and loved it. GPS accuracy is great 99% of the the using a windscreen mount in my car. Directions are clear and loud. Very happy with my purchase!
I love this GPS, it works well and gives accurate directions, route selection option and information. We shifted to Australia recently and NAVIGON has been my biggest help so far, in terms of directions, POIs, Foursquare and Google searches. It is easy to use, setup and save locations. I recommend it.

Some bad moments

We traveled with this app five weeks on the eastcost (NSW and QLD) and here are my experiences: The first impression was fine, clear userinterface and easy to use but we were not totally satisfied with the quality of the navigation. Sometimes the shown way was not precise enought, a few times completely wrong and not all important addresses are known (e.g. had problems to navigate back to my car rental). The root cause seems to be an outdated and unprecise map material. Also very high battery consumption.. and with connected power the phone gets still very hot.. Skobbler in germany was better..
I find this app not worth the money I spent, every time I launch this app (Im in Melbourne), I have to wait like 5 minutes or more for it to detect GPS signal. Even after that, the signal keep losing every 10 seconds. The place it spots you on the map is also not accurate (about 20 metres or more away). Also, the arrow shows which direction youre moving is also inaccurate (I find its usually reversed ???). I dont know whether it because I usually use it for walking, but also on train or tram, it works very ineffective (detecting signal and recognizing my position is a huge problem for it). Also, I suggest this app to create a menu for "Going from A to B" since sometimes I just wanna see the way between 2 other places, not from where im standing. I find this work best at night (more accurate and detect signal faster) but I dont go any where at night .... hmmm.
App merits 2-3 stars now, but would earn 4-5 stars if the following improvements were made: 1 - Enable address entry via simple text field that supports cut-n-paste (just like Google Maps app). 2 - In the event a precise GPS signal cannot be found (user is in a parking garage or weather is too cloudy/snowy for an accurate satellite lock), app should fallback to use last known precise GPS coordinates so at least some navigation can immediately commence). Otherwise user is stalled until a clear line of site to satellites is achieved. There is no logical reason why lack of satellite signal is not handled more gracefully than this! 3 - Activate GPS sensor immediately upon app start, prior to user initiating any guided navigation. GPS sensor is currently not activated until address has been entered and navigation requested. This wastes precious seconds waiting (5-15s or more) at the Navigation Simulation button, idling the user while the GPS sensor takes its time locking onto a precise enough satellite signal. 4 - It appears some icons and other elements have not been updated to use the iPhone 4 Retina displays native resolution; consequently the maps are not as crisp as they ought to be. The anti-aliasing algorithm could also be improved for smoother appearance of road lines and other vector/linear elements. 5 - Navigation pause feature would be helpful, to enable user to take phone on short foot trips without cancelling navigation or listening to Navigon repeatedly rerouting.
